Swimming pool repairs and servicing 

For licensing purposes, swimming pool repairs and servicing covers work involved in servicing and repair of elements of an existing swimming pool, including internally reticulated pool plumbing not connected to a potable water source, solar thermal heating systems that are not hard wired (excluding any solar photovoltaic (PV) systems), and equipment installation (including filters and skimmers). It also includes any additions, alterations and repairs of a non-structural nature, the painting or surfacing (rendering or application of surface coatings) to a swimming pool, acid washing and pool cleaning.

This class  does not include any work related to paving, decking, landscaping or fencing associated with a pool or spa installation.

A swimming pool is defined under the Swimming Pools Act 1992 as an excavation, structure or vessel:

  1. that is capable of being filled with water to a depth greater than 300 millimetres, and
  2. that is solely or principally used, or that is designed, manufactured or adapted to be solely or principally used, for the purpose of swimming, wading, paddling or any other human aquatic activity,

and includes a spa pool, but does not include a spa bath, anything that is situated within a bathroom or anything declared by the regulations not to be a swimming pool for the purposes of the Swimming Pools Act 1992.

Qualifications

Completion of:

  1. CPP31212 Certificate III Swimming Pool and Spa Service; or
  2. 91520N5W Certificate III in Swimming Pool Repairs, Servicing and Interior Finishes; or
  3. A minimum of 12 months acceptable practical experience in carrying out swimming pool repairs and servicing work verified in the Relevant Application Form by the holder or an endorsed contractor licence or qualified supervisor certificate in the categories of Swimming Pool Repairs and Servicing; Swimming Pool Building; Building; and
    (a)  one of the following that was commenced or completed prior to 15 August 2011:
          (i)  A Licence Skills Assessment conducted by the Building Industry Skills Centre; or
          (ii) The Basic Swimming Pool Repairs and Maintenance training program conducted by the Swimming Pool and Spa Alliance.

Previous licence and supervisor certificate holders

Reissue of expired unconditioned licences and supervisor certificates

If you have ever held a licence or supervisor certificate in the current prescribed categories (Home Building Regulation 2014, clauses 13 and 14, excluding clause 13(a)(ii)) that was not subject to restrictions or conditions and you apply for a new licence or supervisor certificate, your previous licence or certificate will be accepted in lieu of the current qualification requirements.

Reissue of expired licences and supervisor certificates held in the last five (5) years that were subject to conditions or restrictions

If you have held a licence or supervisor certificate in the last five (5) years that was subject to restrictions or conditions in the prescribed categories (Home Building Regulation 2014, clauses 13 and 14, excluding clause 13(a)(ii)), we will assess your application and reissue you a licence or certificate that reflects the scope of work that your licence or certificate covered. This may include being subject to conditions or restrictions.

Swimming pool certification

The Building Professionals Board has created the Category E1 – Swimming Pool Certification to increase the number of certifiers who can inspect barriers to pools and spas for compliance with the Swimming Pools Act 1992.

You're eligible to seek accreditation in this category if you hold an endorsed contractor licence or qualified supervisor certificate allowing you to build a swimming pool or undertake structural landscaping.
