NSW Fair Trading is offering 250 free tests for loose-fill asbestos insulation in the Tamworth Regional Council area.
If you are the owner of a pre-1980s residential property in the Tamworth Regional Council area, you are eligible to register for the free testing.
Loose-fill asbestos was installed in some properties in NSW in the 1960s and 70s.
NSW Fair Trading is aware that a property in the Tamworth Regional Council area was confirmed to contain loose-fill asbestos insulation.
Testing is being undertaken across the area to investigate the potential presence of loose-fill asbestos insulation in other properties.
For now, 250 free tests will be undertaken. The outcome of the testing results will inform any further action that needs to be considered in the Tamworth Regional Council area.
If you own a pre-1980s residential property in the Tamworth Regional Council area, you can register for free testing online at loosefillasbestos.nsw.gov.au or call Service NSW on 1300 784 379.
Registrations will close when an appropriate number of registrations have been received from across the Council area.
You can still register your details with Service NSW on 1300 784 379. This means we can contact you directly if further information in the Tamworth Regional Council area becomes available.
You can also arrange private testing at your own cost by a Licensed Asbestos Assessor. If your property is confirmed to contain loose-fill asbestos insulation, you will be reimbursed for the cost of the test and be eligible to participate in the Voluntary Purchase and Demolition Program. This opportunity is available until 31 July 2017. Visit the Testing for loose-fill asbestos page for more information about arranging private testing, or call 1300 784 379.
If your home is affected by loose-fill asbestos insulation, you have financial assistance and support options available to you as part of the NSW Government’s Voluntary Purchase and Demolition Program.
Visit the Information for residents of affected properties page to find out more about the options available.
Loose-fill asbestos was installed as insulation, but over time, airborne fibres can move from the ceiling into the living spaces.
The NSW Government with input from a range of experts has determined that demolition and comprehensive site remediation is the best way to safely remove loose-fill asbestos from our community.
Once you have registered and you are eligible for free testing, you will be contacted by NSW Fair Trading to confirm your registration. We then undertake a process to confirm you are the owner of the registered property.
Your property will then be allocated to a Licensed Asbestos Assessor, who will contact you directly to arrange a suitable time with you to undertake the testing.
