The associations laws provide for the registration of associations engaged in small-scale, non-profit and non-commercial activities and to provide for corporate governance and financial accountability of associations registered under the legislation.
NSW Fair Trading Registry and Accreditation administers the laws for incorporated associations.

Statutory review of the Associations Incorporation Act 2009
In 2015 a statutory review of the Associations Incorporation Act 2009 was undertaken and the report on the review was tabled in Parliament on 17 November 2015. The Government adopted all the recommendations made by the review.
The Associations Incorporation Act 2009 was amended on 15 April 2016 and on 1 September 2016 to implement the review’s recommendations.

Remake of the Associations Incorporation Regulation
The Regulation, which provides the support and administrative detail needed for the effective operation of the Act, was remade in 2016. The main changes to the Regulation were as a result of the statutory review.
The Associations Incorporation Regulation 2016 commenced on 1 September 2016.
