National Co-operatives Law Update – Sept 2020

The Queensland Co-operatives National Law Act 2020 (CNL Act 2020), which commences on 1 December 2020, will apply the Co-operatives National Law (CNL) and the Co-operatives National Regulation (CNR), as a law of Queensland.

The CNL Act 2020 also repeals the Cooperatives Act 1997 (Qld), and will commence the following legislation in Queensland:

  • Co-operatives National Law (Queensland), which is the CNL applied as a law of Queensland by section 4(1) of the CNL Act 2020.
  • Co-operatives National Regulation (Queensland), which is the CNR applied as a law of Queensland by section 4(2) of the CNL Act 2020.
  • Co-operatives National Law Regulation 2020, which supports the CNL and CNR by prescribing fees and other administrative matters unique to Queensland.

Following commencement of the CNL Act 2020, the above Queensland legislation can be accessed through the Queensland legislation website.

The commencement of the CNL Act 2020 will modernise the legislation governing co-operatives in Queensland and complete the national legislative scheme developed by all states and territories.
