The removal of loose-fill asbestos from the affected property is done by a Class A Licensed Asbestos Removalist (LAA). An asbestos removal control plan, safe work method statements and oversight by a LAA are developed for each property. The Taskforce works closely with local Councils to make sure everyone, including neighbours and people in the immediate area, are informed before demolition begins.
The premises is demolished in a controlled manner using dust suppression measures to make sure any non-bonded fibres are not released into the air. Air monitoring is done during the asbestos removal and demolition to make sure the control measures are effective.
Once the premise has been demolished, the contaminated soil on the property is removed. Tests are then done to make sure the soil from the footprint of the affected premises is not contaminated with loose-fill asbestos insulation and a clearance certificate is issued by the LAA.
Environmental Demolition Plan
The Taskforce will work with each homeowner to discuss the specific demolition process plan for their property.
Each site is individually managed with an Environmental Demolition Plan. The Demolition Plan will contain more specific information about the demolition of the property and will include a Demolition Register. The Demolition Register will identify key dates and outline the demolition activity that will happen during those key dates.
Noise, rubbish and security
As with any house demolition, there will be building site noise during the daytime. You can expect the most noise to happen on the day of the demolition. Contractors are bound by, and must comply with, environmental and safety laws.
There will also be minor night time noise during the demolition process for affected properties. One of the main reasons for night time noise will be the negative pressure units (as part of dust suppression measures) that have to run 24/7 within the building. All efforts will be made to reduce the impact of noise at night.
Once a demolition is scheduled, the Taskforce will keep neighbours informed of the plan and updated on the progress of the demolition.
The Taskforce will assist with any concerns or problems with dumping of rubbish or security of the property.
When will my property be demolished?
Flexible principles will be applied to scheduling the demolition of properties for approved homeowners participating in the Program.
When organising the timing of demolition, grouping affected properties together geographically will also be considered to make sure the Program is efficient.
