More than 97,000 NSW homeowners have registered for the Voluntary Purchase and Demolition Program (the Program). Approximately 70,000 of these registrations qualify for free property testing having met the Program's eligibility criteria – i.e. the home was built prior to 1980 and is located in an identified Local Government Area (LGA).
Property testing inspections have been prioritised to focus on LGAs where the likelihood of properties containing loose-fill asbestos is highest.
Testing is carried out only by Licensed Asbestos Assessors (LAAs) that are industry experts in the identification and assessment of friable loose-fill asbestos insulation.
Almost all testing has now been completed apart from those properties where access into the ceiling space is difficult. In these cases, a licensed electrician will accompany the LAA to gain access to the ceiling space through internal fittings or fixtures. These properties are expected to be completed in the first half of 2018.
