This page outlines the qualifications and experience you need to be a building surveyor in NSW.

Building surveyors can hold either unrestricted or restricted registration. Restricted registration limits the types of buildings you can survey. Unrestricted registration means you can survey any type of building.

The qualifications and experience you need for each registration type are listed below.

Building surveyor - unrestricted

Qualifications

You have completed any of the following:

  1. Bachelor of Building Surveying and Certification (Honours) from Central Queensland University
  2. Bachelor of Construction Management (Building) (Honours) from the University of Newcastle commenced on or after 1 January 2011
  3. Bachelor of Construction Management (building surveying option) from University of South Australia
  4. Graduate Diploma in Building Surveying from Western Sydney University, Bond University or the University of South Australia
  5. Graduate Diploma of Building Surveying from Holmesglen Institute awarded before 31 December 2018
  6. Master of Building Surveying from Bond University or Western Sydney University
  7. Masters Degree, Bachelor Degree or Graduate Diploma in building surveying from a university or higher education provider identified on the TEQSA National Register as a self-accrediting authority
  8. Masters Degree, Bachelor Degree or Graduate Diploma in building surveying listed as an approved course on the TEQSA National Register.

Building surveyor - unrestricted: recognition of equivalent qualifications

The following qualifications are still recognised for building surveyor - unrestricted:

  • Bachelor of Building Surveying – Central Queensland University (note: this course is no longer on offer)
  • Bachelor of Construction Management (Building) – University of Newcastle (note: for people starting this course from 1 January 2011 only)
  • Bachelor of Construction Management and Economics (building surveying option) – University of South Australia
  • Graduate Diploma in Building Surveying and Assessment – University of Technology Sydney (note: this course is no longer on offer)
  • Post Graduate Diploma in Building Surveying – Bond University.

Experience

You have 3 years of recent relevant practical experience.

Building surveyor - restricted (all classes of building)

Qualifications

You have completed any of the following:

  1. Bachelor of Building Surveying and Certification (Honours) from Central Queensland University
  2. Bachelor of Construction Management (Building) (Honours) from the University of Newcastle commenced on or after 1 January 2011
  3. Bachelor of Construction Management (building surveying option) from University of South Australia
  4. Graduate Diploma in Building Surveying from Western Sydney University, Bond University or the University of South Australia
  5. Graduate Diploma of Building Surveying from Holmesglen Institute awarded before 31 December 2018
  6. Master of Building Surveying from Bond University or Western Sydney University
  7. Masters Degree, Bachelor Degree or Graduate Diploma in building surveying from a university or higher education provider identified on the TEQSA National Register as a self-accrediting authority

  11. Bachelor of Construction Management (Honours) with a major in Building Surveying from Western Sydney University
  12. NVR approved Advanced Diploma of Building Surveying (CPC60115)
  13. Graduate Diploma or Graduate Certificate in building surveying from a university or higher education provider identified on the TEQSA National Register as a self-accrediting authority
  14. Graduate Diploma or Graduate Certificate in building surveying listed as an approved course on the TEQSA National Register.

Building surveyor - restricted all classes of building: recognition of equivalent qualifications

The following qualifications are still recognised for building surveyor - restricted all classes of building:

  • Advanced Diploma of Building Surveying – TAFE Leederville, Western Australia (note: this course is no longer on offer)
  • Bachelor of Applied Science (Construction Management and Economics) – Curtin University of Technology
  • Bachelor of Building (Building Surveying) – University of Western Sydney/Western Sydney University (note: this course is no longer on offer)
  • Bachelor of Building Surveying – Central Queensland University (note: this course is no longer on offer)
  • Bachelor of Building Surveying and Inspections – Central Queensland University (note: this course is no longer on offer)
  • Bachelor of Built Environment – University of South Australia
  • Bachelor of Built Environment – University of South Australia
  • Bachelor of Construction Management (Building) – University of Newcastle (note: for people starting this course from 1 January 2011 only)
