Tow truck assessments

If you are the registered operator of a tow truck fitted with a partial lift and tow device (commonly referred to as a cradle), it is your responsibility to ensure the lift capacity determined by Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) is marked on the equipment. This is determined by conducting a tow truck assessment.

If your Tow Truck is not fitted with a partial lift and tow device, you do not need a tow truck assessment.

Procedure

To register a 'lift and tow' type tow truck you will need to call RMS Technical Enquiries on 1300 137 302, who will provide you with the appropriate inspection procedures.

For the purpose of registration, a tow truck is a vehicle used to tow vehicles which has fitted to its rear, an apparatus to lift a vehicle partially clear of the ground and maintain the vehicle in such a position while towing.

Tow trucks that are licensed by Fair Trading are inspected by RMS annually for renewal of their registration. Tow Trucks that are licensed by Fair Trading will display distinctive 'TT' or 'TTT' number plates.
