Metropolitan plumbing and drainage inspections

Information for plumbers and drainers

An audit-based system for inspecting plumbing and drainage work is in operation in Sydney, the Illawarra, Blue Mountains and Newcastle areas. The inspection system allows for only a portion of the plumbing and drainage work to be inspected rather than all of it. Plumbers and drainers are required to book an audit inspection but they will not know if the work has been selected for an inspection until the appointment time.

If you are a plumber or drainer in Sydney, Illawarra, Blue Mountains and the Newcastle area you must submit

  • a Notice of Work to NSW Fair Trading before starting work,
  • a Certificate of Compliance to Fair Trading and the property owner at the final inspection, and
  • a Sewer Service Diagram to Fair Trading and the property owner at the completion of the drainage work.

How to book

Contact Plumbing Inspection and Assurance Service (PIAS) on 1300 889 099 between 8am and 2pm, Monday to Friday to book an audit inspection. Go to the booking an inspection page for more information.

Technical advice for licensed plumbers and drainers

Fair Trading can provide technical advice about the interpretation of the Plumbing Code of Australia (PCA) and relevant industry standards. This service is only available to licensed plumbers and drainers in the Sydney, Illawarra, Blue Mountains and Newcastle regions. Plumbers can send their question to PIAStechnical@finance.nsw.gov.au.

If you don’t have email access, call 1300 889 099 between 8am and 12pm, Monday to Friday. Callers must have a current version of the Plumbing Code of Australia (PCA) and standards (AS/NZS 3500) available as Fair Trading’s technical support staff will refer to these documents.

Regional plumbers

If you’re a plumber or drainer located outside of the Sydney, Illawarra, Blue Mountains and Newcastle regions, the information in this section does not affect how you book inspections. Contact your local council for all plumbing and drainage inspection bookings and technical advice.
